Use a timer to know how long your written speech is. This will allow you to edit your speech to keep it within the necessary time constraints. If your speech is too short, research and find more information to fill in the time. Also remember, you never want to rush through your speech; remember to pace yourself.

After you’re able to recite completely from memory, now is the time you want to perfect your delivery. Memorizing the speech also makes ad libbing on stage more comfortable.

When you are giving a speech, face the audience. Don’t let yourself get distracted by things occurring around the room. If you want to engage your audience, you need to give them all of your attention.

TIP! Always look at your audience when you are speaking in public. Do not let yourself become distracted by something else happening in the room.

Make sure you understand your topic when you’re preparing your speech. Do a broad type of research that enables you to view the topic from all sides. This kind of preparation is bound to pay off during the question and answer session.

Understand the audience you are speaking to. If you know who is attending, it will help you to engage them better. If possible, greet the audience members individually as they come in. It can make it easier to talk in front of your audience.

TIP! If possible, meet some of the audience members before your speech. If you know who is attending, it will help you to engage them better.

Become familiar with the venue in which you will make your public speech. Test your voice in it to see how much you have to project. Use whatever equipment is available and get used to it. Telling the audience a true story is a great way to become good at public speaking. Outline your overall story prior to speaking in public. It is important that you lead into the story with an introduction and that you end with a conclusion. Your story will seem natural if it’s a real one.

Practicing is the best method to learn what you’re going to say. Try using a mirror or recording your speech to revise and see yourself during practice sessions.

Continue with your speech even if you feel you messed up. You will ruin your momentum if you try and backtrack to include the missing information. The audience has not seen your speech, so they will remain unaware that you missed something unless you tell them.

TIP! If you realize you missed a sentence of your speech, just keep going. If you stop abruptly to backtrack to the missing section, the whole speech might be compromised.

Do not take drugs or alcohol to relieve your speech. You might think it will make you bolder, but it is not a good idea. There is little worse than being on stage in front of people and forgetting everything due to the alcohol you drank before the speech.

Even if the event you’re speaking at is casual, dress nice. Your attire plays a major role in your speech. Male speakers should think about wearing a tie, because it generally draws attention to the mouth area.

Smile and shake hands when you can. The audience is sure to show more interest when you have a great attitude.

Rehearse your presentation daily. This is a great boost to your confidence, as you really understand everything about what’s in the speech beforehand. However, don’t become so overconfident that you go onstage without notes. That way if you forget what you are to say, you can glance down at your notes and refresh your memory.

Note cards really can help you out. While it it good to memorize your speech, you should carry a set of note cards with you to the podium.

Take the time to memorize your speech. Watch your facial expressions and gestures in a mirror. Ask your friends and relations to listen to your speech and provide feedback. Good preparation ensures that you will make the best presentation possible.
